One of the primary challenges facing the program is the recruitment of volunteers since our program currently operates Tuesday's and Thursday's (9:15 am -1:45 pm) during the school year. Hearts and Hooves volunteers are very special people who work tirelessly to improve the quality of health and life of these special young participants of North Shelby School.Volunteers are paid with a sense of service and accomplishment, smiles and measurable improvement visible to them. Nothing in the world is better than the smile of pride from a young rider after a challenging and beneficial ride on a kind and gentle therapy horse in a safe and protected riding arena. We are grateful for our volunteers, the "Hearts" of the Hearts and Hooves program. The success of Hearts and Hooves relies on the caring and dedication shown by each and every one of our volunteers.

For most participants, it takes three volunteers - a leader and two side-walkers. If we have two participants during a riding session, that's six volunteers.

HOW TO HELP

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."

– Mahatma Gandhi

Time commitments can range from a few hours for a single project to as much time as you have available. Try something new. Learn new skills and meet new people.

Volunteers are needed to do just about anything from feeding and grooming the horses to leading students around the ring.  We can also use help to clean the arena, organize all the program equipment, and assist with landscaping.

Volunteers are needed in all areas of the program. Donations are needed to help supply the specialized equipment used to operate the program. Please consider making a difference in the lives of some very special children through the donation of your time, talents and resources.

All of our therapy animals are available for sponsorship. When you sponsor an animal you are providing feed, supplies, and vet care for that animal. Check out our four-legged volunteers available for sponsorship!

Our Instructor is able to provide presentations to local organizations and businesses as requested. If you are interested in volunteering for Hearts and Hooves, please contact us.

To volunteer with us you need to attend our Orientation, if you are working with our horses and participants you will need to attend our Hands on Training as well.
